Southeastern Taiwan shaken by 6.1 magnitude quake, no immediate reports of damage
The 6.1 magnitude quake, centered in Taitung, caused no damage despite shaking Taipei and other cities, with authorities issuing island-wide alerts, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said.
- On Wednesday , the Central Weather Administration said a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Taitung county, with no immediate reports of damage, the National Fire Agency said.
- Lying near the junction of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is prone to earthquakes and experienced deadly quakes in 2016 and 1999, killing more than 100 and more than 2,000 people respectively.
- The Central Weather Administration said the quake struck at 5.47pm with a depth of 11.9km, and intensity four in Hualien and Pingtung, with alerts for Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Tainan.
- Industry and emergency officials said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. reported no evacuation was needed, and the National Fire Agency confirmed no damage to the island's transport networks so far.
- Local television showed products falling from supermarket shelves in Taitung, and the quake shook buildings in Taipei, the capital.
