71 Killed in South Sudan Intercommunal Violence: Govt, Witnesses
Police and military reinforcements restored control after attackers briefly seized the town, while officials said the death toll may not be final.
Intercommunal violence killed 71 people in Rumbek, South Sudan, including four soldiers, according to the government.
Witnesses told AFP that attackers from outside Rumbek briefly took control of the town before withdrawing after police and military reinforcements arrived.
The government said security forces had regained control of Rumbek, arrested four armed civilians, and were working to protect residents.
South Sudan has faced other deadly intercommunal clashes, including violence that killed at least 169 people in March.
