South Korea's largest satellite launched on Nuri rocket in ambitious space mission

The Nuri rocket deployed 13 satellites including South Korea’s largest science satellite, marking a key step in transitioning to private-sector-led space launches, officials said.

  • Early Thursday, South Korea launched its largest domestically developed science satellite aboard the Nuri rocket, the fourth of six planned launches through 2027.
  • Hanwha Aerospace Co. took charge of manufacturing, assembly and operation after the government transferred key launch-vehicle technologies, marking the fourth launch and Korea's entry into a private-sector-led space era.
  • The rocket was loaded with around 960 kilograms of payload, heavier than the third launch's 500 kilograms, and the launch time was 1:13 a.m. after a sensor issue delay; the medium satellite separates first, followed by two cube satellites at 20-second intervals.
  • Officials said key mission objectives were successful, marking the first full domestic-stage operation by Korea Aerospace Research Institute and advancing the commercial launch ecosystem with Hanwha Aerospace Co.
  • Among the dozen cube satellites, Space LiinTech's BEE-100 will conduct the world's first protein crystallization experiment, while BioCabinet, commissioned by Hallym University, supports 3D bioprinting and stem cell tests.
