South Korea's largest satellite launched on Nuri rocket in ambitious space mission
South Korea's Nuri rocket carried 13 satellites weighing around 960 kg, marking a key step toward commercial launches and private sector-led space capabilities.
- Early Thursday, South Korea launched its largest domestically developed science satellite aboard the Nuri rocket, the fourth of six planned launches through 2027.
- Hanwha Aerospace Co. took charge of manufacturing, assembly and operation after the government transferred key launch-vehicle technologies, marking the fourth launch and Korea's entry into a private-sector-led space era.
- The rocket was loaded with around 960 kilograms of payload, heavier than the third launch's 500 kilograms, and the launch time was 1:13 a.m. after a sensor issue delay; the medium satellite separates first, followed by two cube satellites at 20-second intervals.
- Officials said key mission objectives were successful, marking the first full domestic-stage operation by Korea Aerospace Research Institute and advancing the commercial launch ecosystem with Hanwha Aerospace Co.
- Among the dozen cube satellites, Space LiinTech's BEE-100 will conduct the world's first protein crystallization experiment, while BioCabinet, commissioned by Hallym University, supports 3D bioprinting and stem cell tests.
