South Carolina House approves a new congressional map intended to give GOP all 7 seats; bill heads to Senate soon
The plan would shift the state’s only Democratic-held U.S. House seat and could help Republicans win an additional seat, lawmakers said.
On Tuesday, the South Carolina House approved a congressional redistricting plan aimed at securing all seven seats for the GOP, sending the bill to the Senate.
President Donald Trump urged the redistricting plan to reshape the state's only Democratic-held U.S. House district as part of a broader effort to retain the party's slim House majority.
Democratic state Rep. JA Moore said, "What you all are doing is wrong," while the NAACP called for a boycott of public university athletic programs in states attempting to weaken Black voting representation.
If enacted, the legislation would delay U.S. House primaries until Aug and cost at least $3 million for a new statewide election; four Republicans voted against the bill before its final Senate vote.
Other Southern states are rushing to redraw districts following a recent Supreme Court decision, though some Republicans worry the redistricting could backfire and allow Democrats to gain seats.
