South Bay lawmaker’s bill aims to bolster hate crime charges
Assemblymember Evan Low, D-Campbell, is pushing Assembly Bill 1064. The bill would add bias motivation and selective targeting components to the statutory description of a hate crime. The California Public Defenders Association has characterized the bill as so vague that it risks escalating a whole swath of charges into hate crimes.
