South African Police Arrest 5 After Farmer Is Shot, Ears Cut Off in Violent Robbery
Police say the suspects ambushed Marx, tied up a farmworker and stole firearms before fleeing, while two linked guns were recovered.
South African police arrested five suspects aged 26 to 56 for the October 28 attack on farmer Donovan Marx. The suspects appear in the Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom Magistrates' Courts today, November 3, facing charges of house robbery and attempted murder.
On October 28, three armed men attacked Marx at his Syferfontein farm, shooting and stabbing him before cutting off his ears. The attackers bound a farmworker and ransacked the property for three firearms before fleeing in the farmer's van.
Following an "intensive investigation," North West police recovered clothing and jewelry alongside four firearms, two linked to the attack. Marx remains hospitalized in stable condition; Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police chairperson Ian Cameron called the arrests "significant progress."
Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp condemned the attack as "senseless and barbaric," while Ian Cameron called for an ethics review of MP Andile Mngxitama's remarks, which allegedly attempted to give "torture political legitimacy."
Research by the Institute for Security Studies indicates robbery is the predominant motive for farm attacks, challenging claims of an organized campaign against white farmers. Officials urge against using such violence to fuel racial division.
In South Africa, a group of robbers stormed a cattle farmer's property, shooting him and cutting off both of his ears. Fortunately, the farmer survived, but doctors were unable to reattach his ears.
JOHANNESBURGO (AP) — Police in South Africa arrested five suspects in connection with a violent robbery on a farm in the Northwest Province, where a 50-year-old farmer was shot and his ears cut off.
