Tough Test for Ruling ANC as South Africans Vote
The vote will gauge support for the ANC as voters weigh failing services, coalition instability and national concerns over jobs, crime and immigration.
On Wednesday, South Africans will elect councilors in municipal elections, who will then select mayors to oversee water, sanitation and rubbish collection in Johannesburg, an economic hub home to nearly 5 million people.
Fragile ANC-led coalitions have struggled to maintain essential services, with Johannesburg experiencing nine mayors in 10 years amid crumbling infrastructure including broken traffic lights, unreliable electricity and burst water pipes.
The water crisis has dominated campaigns across South Africa, after more than 500 people were treated for stomach illnesses last week following contaminated water exposure, alongside rising tensions over illegal immigration.
Opposition candidates have mounted extensive campaigns: ActionSA's Herman Mashaba seeks another mayoral term, the Democratic Alliance nominated 75-year-old Helen Zille, and the Economic Freedom Fighters fielded Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng.
Local results may reflect national trends as the ANC seeks to maintain control following its 2024 parliamentary majority loss, with voters prioritizing immediate service delivery over national issues like unemployment and crime.
