South Africa: Musina Swamped As Malawians Stuck At Border With Wrong Papers
More than 150 buses are expected at Beitbridge as officials turn away vehicles without the correct Emergency Travel Certificates.
- Thousands of Malawian nationals are stranded outside the Department of Home Affairs office in Musina, Limpopo, waiting for travel papers to return home. Families spent Monday night sleeping outside under the sun.
- The crisis follows the closure of a Durban repatriation site, with most of its 7,000 people moved to Musina. Buses lacking Emergency Travel Certificates are being diverted to a truck stop at the Beitbridge Border Post.
- Many travelers report having no food or money left. Ishmael Omar said: "We do not have any money, so our situation is very difficult. We have asked our ambassador to help us."
- Border Management Authority Assistant Commissioner Dr Nkhuliseni Luvhengo said additional officers were deployed to manage volume. "Our biggest challenge is managing traffic because trucks are already queued for about eight kilometres," he said.
- Officials expect traffic to rise sharply throughout Tuesday as more convoys arrive. More than 150 buses are due at Beitbridge to complete the transfer of 7,000 people from the closed Durban site.
