Source: Texans trade for Saints punter Kai Kroeger in exchange of late-round 2028 draft picks
Saints traded rookie punter Kai Kroeger to Texans in a 2028 draft pick swap after signing veteran Ryan Wright to a $14 million deal, upgrading their punting position.
On March 10, 2026, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the Houston Texans acquired punter Kai Kroeger from the New Orleans Saints in a 2028 sixth- and seventh-round pick swap.
Monday the New Orleans Saints signed veteran punter Ryan Wright to a four-year $14 million deal, creating a surplus that led to trading Kroeger the next day.
Kroeger started all 17 games in 2025 and finished with a 63.9 Pro Football Focus grade, tied for the league-high with two blocked punts.
The Texans replaced Pro Bowler Tommy Townsend by acquiring Kroeger, and the deal can become official when the league year starts Wednesday, improving the Saints' 2028 draft position.
The trade coincides with broad offseason activity from both teams as Kai Kroeger remains under contract at salaries of $1.005M and $1.112 million through 2027, and the Texans added Jake Hummel.
