Russia, Algeria Back Niger Junta as Soldiers Mutiny
The mutiny briefly seized the airport and Air Base 101 before government forces killed and arrested the soldiers, officials said.
- On Saturday, mutineers attempted to seize power from the junta led by Abdourahamane Tchiani in Niger Republic, but the government retained control after the Africa Corps helped Nigerien Defence forces repel the uprising.
- Most mutineers came from active frontlines around Ouallam and Dosso, driven by worsening insecurity. Jihadi researcher Hasret Kargin noted the unrest erupted a day after the junta released four al-Qaeda linked jihadists in exchange for 11 soldiers.
- Mutineers seized Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101, attempting to breach the presidential palace in Niamey. Footage showed tactical armoured vehicles securing streets as the Nigerien Presidential Guard regained control through an air and ground offensive.
- The Alliance of Sahel States , comprising Burkina Faso and Mali, affirmed it remained "fully committed" to Niger. Algeria assured the government of "full solidarity and firm support," while the Turkiye Republic called for "restraint" to preserve security.
- Security analysts warn that instability creates a window for groups like the Islamic State Sahel Province and JNIM to entrench themselves. Kargin urged the government not to dismiss the plot as a mere mutiny, as similar crises could recur.
