Solar cell manufacturer to open facility in Upstate, bringing over 500 jobs

The $350 million project will add 564 jobs and lift Suniva’s annual solar cell output to more than 5.5 gigawatts.

  • On Tuesday, Suniva announced it selected Laurens County, South Carolina, for its first state manufacturing facility, bringing a $350 million investment and 564 new jobs.
  • Founded nearly two decades ago, Suniva is a U.S.-owned manufacturer whose expansion follows research efforts funded by the U.S. Department of Energy at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
  • The company will lease a 620,000-square-foot building at 1200 Commerce Blvd in Laurens, with the new plant working in concert with Suniva's existing Georgia facility.
  • Governor Henry McMaster said the investment strengthens the Palmetto State's commitment to innovative energy, while Suniva CEO Tony Etnyre stressed that domestic solar production is essential for the nation's future.
  • Opening in 2027, the facility will help the combined Georgia site produce over 5.5 GW of solar cells annually, positioning Suniva as one of the nation's largest solar manufacturers.
