SoftBank weighs $18 billion acquisition of Allied Universal: Reuters
The deal could value Allied Universal at about $18 billion as SoftBank looks to use robots for some security work, Reuters reported.
On Friday, SoftBank Group reportedly considered acquiring Allied Universal, the largest U.S. security services provider, in a potential deal valuing the firm at about $18 billion, Bloomberg News reported.
The potential acquisition complements SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son's increasing focus on AI, as he explores using AI-powered robots across industries to strengthen infrastructure supporting the technology.
Allied, backed by private equity firm Warburg Pincus and Canadian pension fund La Caisse, carries about $12 billion in publicly traded debt across loans and bonds, according to Bloomberg data.
This transaction builds on SoftBank's broader push into robotics and automation, following its agreement last year to acquire Swiss engineering group ABB's robotics business for $5.4 billion.
Deployment of humanoid-like security workers will likely take more time, and both SoftBank and Allied declined to comment, with deliberations remaining preliminary and no final price agreed.
SoftBank analyzes a possible purchase of Allied Universal that, according to a report, could value the company’s capital by up to USD 18 billion. The operation is still at a preliminary stage and, adding the debt attributed to Allied, the potential business value would be close to USD 30 billion. SoftBank’s ADRs retreated after the news had come out, although it has not been confirmed that the report was the cause of the movement.
