US Social Security scraps plan to limit disability benefits, WaPo reports

The Social Security Administration halted a rule change that could have cut disability benefits for 750,000 people in the next decade, following widespread advocacy and media scrutiny.

  • Social Security Administration officials said the proposed change to disability eligibility has been abandoned, so no immediate change will affect Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance programs.
  • Earlier this year, the SSA published a proposed rule that would have reduced or removed age as a factor in determining eligibility for Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance.
  • Urban Institute analysis found a 10 percent eligibility reduction could mean 750,000 fewer people receiving benefits and 80,000 fewer widows and children, causing an $82 billion reduction in benefits over 10 years.
  • Last month, more than 160 House Democrats signed a letter to Frank Bisignano opposing the change.
  • An SSA spokesperson said the agency will develop proposals to 'propose improvements to the disability adjudication process' and share them publicly, with Vallas, CEO of the National Academy of Social Insurance, expressing support to strengthen disability programs.
