Social Media Star Border Collie Stolen, Sold to Restaurant for £20 and Eaten
On May 11, Chinese travel blogger Guo's celebrity Border Collie, Chutou, disappeared from his family home in Henan province. Authorities confirmed the dog, followed by more than 1.5 million people, was stolen, sold to a restaurant for 180 yuan , and killed.
Surveillance footage showed two individuals taking Chutou on an electric scooter, prompting Guo to return from overseas. Two weeks later, he tracked down a suspect and offered 10,000 yuan for the dog's return, but the man claimed he mistook the collared, GPS-equipped pet for a stray.
The alleged thief reportedly stated, "The dog is dead, so stop making a fuss." When Guo attempted to retrieve his pet's remains, the butcher replied, "The hair was thrown in the rubbish long ago," offering no apology.
Police in Ningling County have opened a case into the incident. Solicitor Du Wei from the Sichuan Weixu Law Firm explained that criminal theft charges require the stolen property to exceed $300 , a threshold Guo is working to meet with evidence.
This incident highlights the absence of national companion-animal protection laws in China, where pets are officially classified as property. While Humane Society International notes less than 20 per cent of the population consumes dog meat, such disputes are typically resolved through civil compensation.
The prominent Chinese Border Collie "Chutou" was stolen and sold for 23 euros to a restaurant where he landed on the menu, with 1.2 million followers on social networks.
