Australia’s World Cup Roster Represents the Country’s New Multiculturalism
The squad’s diverse backgrounds have fueled debate over migration and identity, with four players linked to refugee or displacement histories, Mabil said.
During Refugee Week, the Socceroos' viral video showcasing the team's diverse, multicultural backgrounds has resonated with Australians. Socceroos veteran Awer Mabil said the unedited footage offers a raw reflection of modern Australia.
Four members of the 26-man Socceroos squad—Mabil, Nestory Irankunda, Mohamed Toure, and Milos Degenek—are former refugees who fled conflict. Mabil was born in a Kakuma, Kenya camp; Degenek escaped war in Croatia before settling in Australia.
Mabil, named Young Australian of the Year in 2023, founded Barefoot to Boots, sending supplies to the Kakuma, Kenya refugee camp where he was born. He now serves as a 'big brother' to younger teammates.
Irankunda became the youngest Socceroo to score at a World Cup during last Saturday's 2-0 win over Turkey. Mabil praised the squad for supporting each other during these high-pressure moments.
Reflecting on his journey, Mabil sent a message to displaced people worldwide that "everything is possible." As the World Cup continues, the team's platform serves as a beacon of inclusion for those facing hardship.
