Soccer great Pelé's legacy shines on in his one-time home ahead of the World Cup
Fans and tourists visit the Pelé Museum and Santos Futebol Clube as the city works to keep his legacy alive after his 2022 death.
As the FIFA World Cup approaches, tourists flock to Santos to visit the Museum and explore memorabilia connecting the Brazilian port city to Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pel.
Pel played for Santos Futebol Clube from 1956 to 1974 and helped Brazil win the FIFA World Cup in 1958, 1962, and 1970, cementing his status as a global icon.
Museum director Paulo Monteiro said the facility carries a "great responsibility" to maintain Pel's legacy, while street artist Eduardo Kobra honors the legend with vibrant murals throughout Santos.
Local business owner Albino notes that international media interest draws huge numbers of visitors to Santos, which residents consider a privilege that Pel played for the city.
Many of the more than 400,000 residents of Santos want Pel's legacy to endure, with 67-year-old Mario noting that Pel's humility distinguishes him from modern players like Cristiano Ronaldo.
As the FIFA World Cup approaches, the image of one of Brazil's most recognizable footballers is still alive in Santos, the former home of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, much better known as Pelé.
