SNP blocks inquiry into Murrell scandal
MSPs backed an independent review of party finances by 70 votes to 53 after Labour’s bid for a Holyrood inquiry was blocked.
On Wednesday, the Scottish Parliament rejected a specific inquiry into Peter Murrell's embezzlement scandal, instead passing a Scottish Greens amendment calling for an independent investigation into all political party finances by 70 votes to 53.
Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell pleaded guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 over a 12-year period, prompting widespread calls for a parliamentary probe into the party's financial governance.
During the debate, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar urged MSPs to "learn lessons," describing the embezzlement as the "greatest political scandal since devolution" in Scotland.
SNP Minister for Parliamentary Business Jamie Hepburn blocked the specific inquiry, telling MSPs that competing parties scrutinizing each other creates an "obvious conflict of interest."
Westminster's Scottish Affairs Committee has delayed its decision on launching an independent probe, awaiting Holyrood's next steps following the vote on party finances.
