Snow, storms could disrupt Thanksgiving travel as millions hit the road for holiday
A record 81.8 million travelers are expected this Thanksgiving, with severe weather causing flight delays and heavy highway congestion at major U.S. hubs, officials said.
- From Tuesday, Nov. 25, approximately 81.8 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles through Monday, Dec. 1, AAA projects.
- AAA data show that driving accounts for about 90% of travelers, or 73 million drivers, as Thanksgiving travel has grown in priority in recent years, Auto Club spokesman Doug Shupe said.
- At major hubs, disruptions already hit as the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen more than 17.8 million people through Dec. 2, and FlightAware logged over 500 flight delays or cancellations Tuesday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
- INRIX warns that traffic on interstate highways will increase in the next 24 hours, and San Diego International Airport expects daily passenger volumes to top 80,000 through Dec. 1.
- AccuWeather forecasts a winter storm across the northern U.S., risking delays Friday or Saturday, while this Sunday, Nov. 30, may see as many as 90,000 travelers at the airport.
