Snap settles with two teens during trial testing claims social media caused depression, eating disorders
The deal comes as the teens alleged Snapchat’s design fueled compulsive use and contributed to depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
On Nov 2, Snap Inc reached a settlement during a Los Angeles trial over claims brought by two teenagers who alleged the platform caused their depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
Thousands of lawsuits target social media companies including Snap, Meta, TikTok, and Alphabet's YouTube, alleging they knowingly designed platforms to addict children; the companies reject these claims.
Plaintiffs from Illinois and Mississippi attributed compulsive habits to features like autoplay and infinite scroll, having begun using the platforms as children.
Attorneys John Morgan and Emily Jeffcott said, "Our ultimate goal is to hold these social media companies accountable," as the settlement links to conditions for a $5 billion state fund.
A Jury verdict awarded $6 million in damages for platform negligence in March, while Meta struck settlements worth up to $18 billion with states in August, setting precedent for ongoing litigation.
