Smoke keeps Bradley Creek fire behaviour in check, but winds are in the forecast for the next few days
Smoke has kept fire behavior low, but crews are preparing for stronger winds as more than 2,300 residents receive support.
- The Bradley Creek wildfire holds at 2,852 hectares on Friday, with dense smoke blanketing the Okanagan and moderating fire intensity. BC Wildfire Service information officer Morgan Blois noted the smoke limits solar heating, keeping behavior to low-vigor surface fire.
- Firefighters are utilizing 12 helicopters, 40 pieces of heavy equipment, and 105 structure protection crews to battle the complex, which includes the Quilpituk Creek wildfire. Crews continue expanding control lines and conducting mop-up operations.
- More than 2,300 residents impacted by the wildfire have received support from the City of Vernon Emergency Support Services. An additional 1,230 individuals received help through online and phone registration as evacuation orders remain in place.
- Working with the Okanagan Indian Band, Canada Task Force One is conducting damage assessments of homes on the reserve. The OKIB confirmed that "as damage is confirmed, the OKIB will continue contacting affected OKIB Members directly" before sharing information broadly.
- With hot weather and possible 20 km/h winds forecast for the weekend, the Okanagan Indian Band warned that "significant work remains" before residents can safely return. Officials caution that if smoke coverage lifts, fire activity has potential to increase.
