Smartphone App for Muscle Relaxation Reduces Migraine Disability in ED Patients

The RELAXaHEAD app with progressive muscle relaxation helped 82.4% of migraine patients reduce disability compared to 45.7% in the control group, according to NYU researchers.

  • On October 16, the study published in JAMA Network Open showed app users saw nearly double the improvement in migraine disability using the RELAXaHEAD app in NYU Langone Health emergency departments.
  • Because migraine affects more than 14% of people globally, emergency department patients often revisit, motivating alternate treatments; Mia T. Minen said the study shows `the potential of smartphone-based interventions to empower patients`.
  • Using the MIDAS questionnaire, researchers randomly assigned participants to the RELAXaHEAD app with PMR or a control group using a headache diary to measure migraine disability.
  • Mia T. Minen, MD, MPH emphasized clinical aims, saying `The RELAXaHEAD app is meant to reduce migraine disability and hopefully reduce the rate at which patients return to the emergency department for migraine`, and disclosed her financial interests licensed to CareTurner, managed by NYU Langone Health.
  • Collaborators from multiple institutions supported the trial, and funded by NIH grants NCCIH K23 AT009706 and NIH NCATS UL1 TR001445, Minen's team is launching a large-scale clinical study in primary care.
