Researchers at the Delft University of Technology have developed a touch sensor for drones, allowing the aircraft to feel obstacles, follow surfaces and explore their surroundings even in complete darkness.
Most drones use camera, depth and distance sensors to perceive their environment. TU Delft's drone uses artificial whiskers for this.
A new tiny drone can navigate through the dark thanks to artificial whiskers and even map out an unknown area. Subscribe to the newsletter! Want the latest science news fresh in your inbox every day? Rats and mice can travel through dark and narrow places thanks to their mustaches. Now, researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have moved this strategy to tiny autonomous drones: two artificial mustaches and pressure sensors make it possible to detect obstacles, track surfaces and build touch maps without using cameras.
