Elections Alberta ‘Ready to Deliver’ as Advanced Referendum Polls to Open This Week
Elections Alberta expects record turnout as about 44,000 workers prepare to count 10 ballots by hand within 48 hours.
On Tuesday, Alberta began five days of advance in-person voting for Premier Danielle Smith's 10-question referendum. Officials opened 310 polling stations across the province for electors to cast ballots ahead of October 19.
Questions on immigration policy, constitutional reform, and whether Albertans want to remain in Canada or hold a second vote on quitting Confederation feature in the referendum. Smith seeks mandates to lobby provincial counterparts on these issues.
Elections Alberta expects a record turnout of 80 to 85 per cent of the province's three million electors. The agency has hired at least 60,000 workers to facilitate the massive undertaking, which requires about 45 million printed ballots.
Spokesperson Maia Hanrahan said teams are prepared to handle administrative challenges, including about 300 mail-in packages arriving with missing questions and 3,000 ballots returned with documentation errors. Workers are 'friends and neighbours,' she added.
Polling concludes on October 19, when just over 1,400 stations will open. By law, votes must be hand-counted within 48 hours, with early results expected after 8 p.m. on the final voting day.
