Australian court upholds racial discrimination ruling against Pauline Hanson

- The dispute began when Faruqi posted on X that she could not "mourn the leader of a racist empire" following Queen Elizabeth II's death, prompting Hanson to respond with an "angry personal attack" telling her to "piss off back to Pakistan."
- Justice Angus Stewart ruled in 2024 the post violated the Racial Discrimination Act, describing it as "anti-Muslim" and "a racist trope with a long history"; the court rejected Hanson's defense that the comment fell within political communication exemptions.
- Outside the Federal Court, Faruqi stated, "Today's win is for every single person who has been made to feel that their belonging in this country is conditional," while Justice Melissa Perry reserved the decision on legal costs.
- The court found Hanson has a tendency to make derogatory statements regarding migrants and Muslims over nearly three decades, noting her large following empowered others to post similar messages on X.
