Iran War, Saudi Outage to Boost U.S. Propane, Butane Exports
U.S. LPG exports reached record highs amid Middle East tensions and a Saudi Aramco terminal outage, with 70% of 2025 propane production exported, analysts said.
- On Monday, analysts warned that chaos from the Iran conflict will drive record demand for U.S. LPG, with exports reaching 1.8 million barrels of propane and nearly 500,000 barrels of normal butane daily in 2024.
- After the Juaymah LPG export terminal shut on Feb. 23, Saudi Aramco is considering alternative routes, tightening Middle Eastern supply, amidst conflict and outages.
- Inventory reports show that U.S. LPG export capacity at Texas coast terminals, with 2.2 million to 2.4 million barrels per day, and inventories at 2.4 million barrels for the week ended Feb. 23, support the surge.
- Analysts predict stronger demand for non-Middle Eastern energy as global LPG buyers shift to U.S. supplies, while U.S. consumers and companies remain insulated by high domestic inventories, Eric Smith said.
- Since the shale revolution beginning in 2007, U.S. LPG exports have grown 18 consecutive years, with a $29 billion export value in 2024 and exploration of new routes like pipelines to the Red Sea amid shifting demand.
