Six in 10 over 65s are already worrying about catching flu from A&E trips
Research found 80% of older adults and 88% of carers would feel more confident seeking emergency care with reliable rapid testing.
Six in 10 adults over 65 are anxious about visiting A&E this winter due to infection risks, with 18 per cent of older people and 44 per cent of carers having avoided emergency care last year.
Data from the UK Health Security Agency shows influenza alone was linked to nearly 8,000 deaths during winter 2024/25, with flu activity higher than the previous year, signaling urgent need for early action.
80 per cent of older adults and 88 per cent of carers said reliable, accurate testing would restore confidence in seeking emergency care, with NICE-recommended rapid molecular testing the gold standard in emergency departments.
Senior nurse Peter Hollely Robins in emergency care emphasized that getting respiratory diagnoses right quickly is essential, as over-reliance on lateral flow tests can slow patient flow during peak winter periods.
Rachel Power, chief executive of the Patients Association, stressed that patients deserve care respecting their dignity and safety, as NHS winter planning continues to shape emergency department preparedness for future pressure.
