House fire in Brooklyn kills 6 people and injures 7, more than 200 firefighters respond
Investigators are examining lithium-ion batteries found at the scene as more than 200 firefighters battled the blaze and residents were displaced.
A three-alarm fire engulfed a Sunset Park, Brooklyn residential building on 58th Street early Thursday, killing six people when more than 230 FDNY personnel responded around 1:40 a.m.
Investigators discovered a lithium-ion battery at the scene, with hazmat teams called to determine whether it sparked the blaze that officials said originated on the second floor.
More than 200 firefighters brought the inferno under control in about three hours; seven others, including three firefighters, sustained injuries during the response.
The American Red Cross is providing temporary housing to residents displaced by the fire, while the city's medical examiner remains at the scene investigating the deadly blaze.
This incident follows a Bronx fire just over a week ago where a 10-year-old died after an e-scooter burst into flames, prompting the FDNY to note such devices in homes are not unusual.
