Bronx students stage walkout after murder of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong
Police are investigating bullying, robbery and gang misidentification as motives after the 15-year-old was chased and shot dead, officials said.
- On Thursday, October 29, 15-year-old Javits Frimpong was chased and shot to death near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Bronx. Medics rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died shortly after surgery.
- Three masked suspects chased Frimpong before shooting him in the back, police said, then fled to Freeman Street station. Investigators are seeking Department of Education records regarding bullying but require a subpoena to access the information.
- Students at DreamYard Preparatory School staged a walkout on Monday to protest gun violence and bullying. Classmates remembered Frimpong as a happy teen who stood up for himself, disputing suggestions that he lacked friends.
- Mayor Zohran Mamdani coordinated with President Trump over the weekend to grant Frimpong's mother an immediate visa from Ghana. The visa allows her to travel to New York to attend her son's funeral.
- The New York City Department of Education is providing counseling for students affected by the tragedy. A GoFundMe account has been established to help the family with funeral and burial expenses.
