Sisters drowned after paddle at Watkin Pools in Eryri National Park

The sisters drowned after slipping on a slippery rock while paddling fully clothed in extremely cold pools on a hot day, according to North West Wales coroner.

  • On June 11, 2026, Hajra Zahid, 29, and Haleema Zahid, 25, drowned while paddling fully clothed at the pools on the Watkin Path, with mountain rescue retrieving Haleema.
  • Intending only to paddle, the sisters headed upstream to a pool on the Afon Cwm Llan river, fully clothed and unable to swim, as the group split up for privacy and religious reasons.
  • Mountain rescuers said the women slipped into deep water and were unable to escape; Hajra was found face down while Haleema was recovered by the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team near the waterfall.
  • Assistant Coroner Sarah Riley recorded the deaths as accidental and urged extreme caution about wild swimming pools; Hessham Minhas called Hajra a "determined, ambitious woman" while family friend Raja Azem said Haleema was "always in our prayers".
  • The sisters, originally from Rawalpindi, Pakistan, had come to the UK in January 2025 to study at the University of Chester and reached the Watkin Path pools after a 40-minute walk to the cascading pools, a site popular on social media.
