Liam Napier: Dave Rennie Recalls Blasts From the Past for All Blacks Reboot
Rennie said Henry’s experience and 85% winning record will help reshape the All Blacks selection group ahead of the July test against France.
On Tuesday, All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie appointed Sir Graham Henry as a selector, seeking to leverage the former World Cup-winning coach's expertise and deep understanding of team leadership.
Henry, who led the All Blacks to 88 wins in 103 tests, joins a long line of independent selectors following the precedent set by Sir Brian Lochore and Grant Fox during Sir Steve Hansen's tenure.
Rennie praised Henry as an "avid rugby watcher" with "strong opinions," noting he hopes the veteran will provide a fresh perspective to help identify the right squad members.
Despite Rennie's desire to select Japan-based flyhalf Richie Mo'unga for the South Africa tour, New Zealand Rugby maintains he must first play for Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship to become eligible.
With the team preparing for their first test against France on July 4, Rennie also faces uncertainty regarding Japan-based lock Brodie Retallick, who remains hesitant about the grueling August tour.
The former New Zealand breeder joins Dave Rennie's staff as a recruiter-selectionist. A reinforcement of weight while Mo的unga and Retallick, still in Japan, remain ineligible.
