Simon Harris announces ‘blueprint’ for Irish unity
The party will examine fiscal impacts, public services and economic opportunities as it prepares a unity plan with the Northern Ireland engagement group.
Fine Gael leader Simon Harris announced the party will develop a "blueprint for a unified island" for its Ard Fheis in November, aiming to define what unified Ireland could mean in practical, economic, and societal terms.
Harris introduced the plan while marking the centenary of the birth of Garret FitzGerald at UCD on Sunday. He described unity as "a process requiring leadership, planning and patience," rejecting "slogans, sentimentality, or simplistic assumptions" from other parties.
Professor Deirdre Heenan and the Fine Gael Northern Ireland Engagement Group will lead the work, examining fiscal implications and economic opportunities. Harris stressed that reconciliation must come before politics, with respect at the heart of every conversation.
Sinn leader Mary Lou McDonald welcomed the acknowledgment on Sunday but said Harris must convince Taoiseach Miche to follow the same course. She challenged Harris to demonstrate "seriousness of intent" by supporting proposed legislation in the Oireachtas.
Harris emphasized that no party "owns the conversation on Irish unity" as the 30th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement approaches during his next tenure as taoiseach. Engaging and "listening respectfully" is the best way to ensure a home for all traditions.
