Wrexham Makes Final Four in Bid to Become First Welsh UK City of Culture
The shortlist was cut from nine bids, and the eventual winner will receive £10 million to deliver a year of cultural events, the government said.
On Thursday, October 22, the government revealed four finalists for the UK City of Culture 2029: Blackpool, Milton Keynes, Sheffield, and Wrexham, recommended by the UK City of Culture expert advisory panel.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport runs the competition every four years to boost local pride and economic growth, providing each finalist at least £125,000 to develop their bid.
Five longlisted cities failed to advance, including Portsmouth, Swindon, and Middlesbrough, while Portsmouth's council expressed disappointment despite the city's ongoing centenary exhibition at its museum.
Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock said Wrexham has a "real chance" to become the first Welsh UK City of Culture, with the city's bid, styled as Wrecsam2029, aiming to make the area the world's "most playful place."
The Advisory Panel will visit the final four locations in the near future to assess creative ambition, and the eventual winner will be announced in early 2027, succeeding current holder Bradford.
