Shootout traps tourists at Rio sunrise lookout
- On Tuesday, dozens of tourists were trapped at the Dona Marta lookout in Rio de Janeiro as a gun battle erupted between Brazilian Special Police and the Comando Vermelho gang.
- The clashes began before dawn in the Santa Marta favela, where police launched an operation against the Red Command gang, which controls many poor communities in Rio.
- "It was a war-like situation," Rio photographer Ari Kaye, 43, told AFP, with about 60 people trapped as gunfire lasted around 20 minutes.
- Violence subsequently spread to the affluent neighborhood of Botafogo, where officers carrying rifles were observed running down Sao Clemente Street as authorities suspended all visits.
- This incident marks the second time this year tourists have been caught in police operations; in April, more than 200 visitors were stranded at Morro Dois Irmaos.
