Shipwreck found in Gulf of Maine more than 80 years after WWII sinking

The find ends a multi-year search for one of New England’s largest unfound shipwrecks and brings closure to families of the 43 who died.

The SS Cornwallis was sunk by a U-boat near Mount Desert Rock in 1944, killing 43 of the 48 people aboard. In July, divers discovered its wreck nearly 400 feet below the surface, they announced Tuesday.
