Oliver Gilbert Wins Democratic Nomination for U.S. House in Florida's 24th Congressional District
Shevrin Jones, Oliver Gilbert and Kendrick Meek Jr. lead a seven-candidate race that could decide the district’s next member of Congress, polls show.
On Tuesday, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert III won the Democratic primary for Florida's 24th Congressional District, moving closer to succeeding longtime U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson.
The seat opened earlier this year after Wilson announced her retirement, sparking a race in this heavily Democratic district spanning northern Miami-Dade and southern Broward counties.
Trailing Gilbert by about 2 percent, State Sen. Shevrin Jones conceded Tuesday night against six competitors including Kendrick Meek; Gilbert led fundraising with more than $812,000.
Gilbert secured the nomination after receiving Wilson's endorsement at a June event where she physically handed him a torch; he now faces Republican T.E. Brown in November's general election.
District 24's voting-age population is 47.7% Black and 40.9% Hispanic, with nearly 69% of voters backing Kamala Harris in 2024, positioning Gilbert as a heavy favorite in the deep-blue district.
