Sheriffs Rebel Against Donald Trump’s, Gov. DeSantis’ Mass Deportation Efforts
Republican sheriffs on Florida’s Immigration Enforcement Council oppose deporting non-criminal undocumented immigrants and plan to urge Congress for clearer rules and alternative penalties.
- On Monday , Florida's Republican sheriffs publicly opposed federal mass deportation efforts during a council meeting, with at least six of eight sheriffs agreeing to draft a letter to President Trump.
- Last year, the Florida Legislature created the Florida Immigration Enforcement Council to advise the State Board of Immigration, which includes DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet.
- Proposing alternatives, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd suggested a five-year period with English requirements, civil fines and work conditions for non-criminal undocumented immigrants instead of immediate deportations.
- During Monday's Microsoft Teams meeting, the eight sheriffs on the Council echoed Judd and agreed to draft a letter to Trump and Congress urging narrower deportation guidelines.
