Shelton Slump: Off-Colour Top Seed Falls in ASB Classic Quarter-Finals
On Thursday at the ASB Classic, Marcos Giron beat third-seeded Luciano Darderi 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a match lasting more than seven hours due to repeated rain breaks.
The suspended quarterfinal is due to be completed in an extended session on Friday when fine weather is forecast, with Ben Shelton and Sebastian Baez led 6-4, 0-1 on Thursday.
During rain stoppages, Giron said he hydrated, ate, played cards and showered 18 times on Thursday, admitting he once forgot to sign in but received a special exempt after reaching the semifinals.
The result means Giron has reached semifinals for the second consecutive week after making the last four in Hong Kong last week, beating two seeds including compatriot Alex Michelsen on Wednesday.
He will face either Ben Shelton or Sebastian Baez on Friday, with Baez leading 7-5 before the quarterfinal was rained off, and the winner must also play a semifinal the same day.
