Browns Minicamp Day 1: Monken Not Ready to Name Starting QB

Todd Monken said both quarterbacks have earned the chance to compete, and the Browns expect the decision to stretch into training camp.

  • Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken announced Tuesday that the starting quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will not conclude at mandatory minicamp, which ends Thursday, June 11.
  • Watson, who has 72 career starts, missed the entire 2025 season following Achilles surgery, while Sanders started seven games as a rookie. Both have "earned the right to compete," Monken said.
  • Staff have rotated both quarterbacks through the No. 1 spot daily throughout the offseason. Monken noted "the sad part is in two days they go away for five or six weeks," expressing concern about maintaining momentum.
  • The competition will carry into late July training camp, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who previously cited Watson's "leg up" but now calls the battle a "pick 'em" with two days remaining.
  • Once the team reconvenes in the fall, Monken will dissect reps to determine the starter, stating he will not name a quarterback prematurely. This evaluation strategy prioritizes comprehensive assessment over rushed decisions.
