She was found on the side of a suburban road, murdered. Then her case went cold
The Anoka County Sheriff's Office renewed its call for public tips on the unsolved 1987 murder of nursing assistant Armongene Mason, one of three similar cases involving Black women.
- On Dec. 2, the Anoka County Sheriff's Office Cold Case Homicide Unit renewed its call for tips in a Facebook post and asked for anonymous leads sent to ACSOColdCases@anokacountymn.gov, saying `Several people of interest were developed but no charges filed.`
- Long ago, contemporaneous reporting noted investigators had few leads after Armongene Mason was found the morning before her body was discovered, nearly 30 miles from her North Minneapolis home in Twin Cities suburbs, amid three similar murders raising linkage concerns.
- A motorist found Mason's naked body on County Road 23 at about 5 a.m., and authorities said she had ligature marks, was stabbed then strangled, with her car later located in Minneapolis.
- Mason's family continues to grieve after Armongene Mason, a mother of two and certified nursing assistant, was killed, and the Anoka County Sheriff's Office urged, `Your tip could bring closure to a grieving family.`
- Police at the time downplayed connections between the deaths while the Minneapolis Urban League urged Mayor Don Fraser to investigate possible links, and officers arrested a suspect in Felicia Fonda Williams' case who was soon released.
