Shawn Oliver pleads not guilty to OUI charge after crash
He faces OUI and related traffic charges after a crash that flipped his SUV and damaged five vehicles, police said.
- On Monday, New Bedford City Councilor Shawn Oliver pleaded not guilty to operating under the influence in New Bedford District Court and was released on personal recognizance.
- The charges stem from a crash Saturday around 11:40 p.m. on Dartmouth Street, where Oliver's overturned vehicle damaged five cars; two sustained "extensive damage," police spokesperson Holly Huntoon said.
- Officer Orlando Franco reported that Oliver had "bloodshot and glassy" eyes at St. Luke's Hospital and admitted to consuming "at least 2 alcoholic beverages" at Black Bass Grill earlier that evening.
- Following his release from Ash Street Jail on Sunday, Oliver suspended his campaign for lieutenant governor while the Massachusetts Treatment Center placed him on restricted work duty.
- Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue stated he would ask Oliver to resign if they win the election, with Oliver's next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 16.
