Sextortion on the Rise in Kelowna: RCMP
Kelowna RCMP says youth cases are increasing across Canada and urges victims to stop contact, save evidence and report to police or Cybertip.ca.
- The Kelowna RCMP warned the public of rising sextortion reports, a form of online blackmail where offenders threaten to share intimate images or videos unless victims provide money or additional content.
- Periods of school breaks often mean more free time for youth to connect online with friends and new acquaintances, and while these interactions can be positive, increased screen time and reduced supervision elevate exploitation risk.
- Offenders often develop relationships through social media, messaging apps, or gaming platforms to target victims; RCMP stated boys are more commonly targeted for money while girls are pressured for additional intimate images.
- Cpl. Steven Lang advised victims to stop communicating with offenders, block them, and preserve evidence like screenshots and messages. "If you or someone you know is experiencing sextortion, it is important to remember that you are not alone and support is available," Lang said.
- Anyone believing they are a victim should report the incident to local police and submit a report through Cybertip, Canada's tipline for reporting online sexual abuse. Families should strengthen privacy settings on social media to ensure personal information remains visible only to trusted individuals.
