Hot, Humid Day Ahead with Possible Storms
A moderate risk could bring very large hail, tornadoes and winds up to 70 mph, forecasters said.
On Monday, residents in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa face a severe weather threat. National Weather Service meteorologist Katie Gross warned the region could see "giant hail and strong tornadoes," particularly south of Omaha.
A cold front lingering through the viewing area fuels the severe storm potential. Weekend rainfall saturated the region with 3-5 inches, increasing flood risk as the system moves through.
The NWS issued a flood watch for far southern Iowa through early Tuesday, expecting 1-3 additional inches of rain. Forecasters warned of damaging winds up to 70 mph as storms move eastward.
Storms will fire in northeast Kansas between 4-6 p.m., then spread toward southwest Iowa. By 6-7 p.m., a line of storms sweeps across southern Iowa with embedded tornado risk.
Once severe weather passes, conditions turn tranquil through mid-week. Temperatures drop into the 60s on Tuesday with gray skies and breezy winds as the cold front exits.
