Seven new frog species discovered on Madagascar
Researchers used museum specimens and DNA analysis to resolve a long-standing puzzle and say more unnamed species may still remain.
- An international team discovered seven new species of Rhombophryne on Madagascar, revealing that the island's Diamond frogs are more diverse than previously thought using DNA analysis and Museum collections.
- Study lead author Mark Scherz, curator of herpetology at Denmark's Natural History Museum, said, "When I started this project 12 years ago, we already knew there were several species waiting to be described," noting that untangling the taxonomic puzzle involved sequencing historical specimens.
- Scherz explained that Diamond frogs often possess striking markings or camouflage, noting, "Some species are remarkably round, resembling the rain frogs of mainland Africa," while many inhabit forests fragmented by deforestation.
- Co-Author Andolalao Rakotoarison, from the University of Itasy, Madagascar, stated, "For many species, we still know almost nothing about their breeding biology, population sizes or ecological requirements," which is fundamental for conservation status.
- Researchers brought the total known Rhombophryne species to 27, though more remain undiscovered; Scherz added, "Every newly described species represents millions of years of unique evolutionary history," underscoring vast knowledge yet to discover.
