Serena Williams' Doubles Campaign at Queen's Club in Jeopardy After Victoria Mboko Injury
On Wednesday, 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko retired from her singles match at Queen's Club in London after sustaining a left knee injury, jeopardizing her doubles campaign with Serena Williams scheduled for Thursday.
Williams, 44, made her triumphant return to professional tennis on Tuesday after nearly four years away, defeating third-seeded Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6 , 6-2 alongside Mboko in their opening doubles match.
While leading 4-3 in the second set against Karolina Pliskova, Mboko slipped behind the baseline moving laterally to reach a forehand, telling medical staff there was "no stability right now."
Opponent Karolina Pliskova called the injury "such a shame" and said "this is not the way we want to win," as Mboko's withdrawal terminates Williams's doubles run at the tournament.
Williams plans to play doubles at the Berlin Open next week, though she downplayed returning to singles at Wimbledon on Sunday; 18-year-old American Iva Jovic believes Williams will "be back on the singles court very soon.
