Sen. Carla Nelson Announces Retirement From Minnesota Senate
Nelson cited three decades of public service and legislative wins, including Destination Medical Center and $1.3 billion in school funding.
On Thursday, Minnesota State Senator Carla Nelson announced she will not seek re-election this November, ending her tenure representing communities in Olmsted and Dodge counties.
Nelson began her political career with a two-year term in the Minnesota House in 2003, then served in the Minnesota Senate from 2010 as a moderate Republican holdout in a shifting district.
Her legislative record includes co-authoring the Destination Medical Center, authoring a K-12 education budget bill investing an additional $1.3 billion in Minnesota public schools, and the 2018 Safe and Secure Schools Act investing nearly $20 million in security.
"Serving the people of Rochester and southeastern Minnesota has been a great privilege and responsibility," Nelson said, noting constituent interactions reminded her of her purpose throughout three decades of public service.
There are fewer than six months before the general election, with no clear successor yet identified. Nelson indicated she looks forward to new ways to serve beyond her legislative role.
