UK to review high-profile figures' security arrangements after ex-minister's murder
An independent review will examine security for royals and politicians as police support expands to party leaders, former lawmakers and spokespeople.
On Monday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced an urgent review of security arrangements for high-profile public figures, including politicians and royals. "It is clear there is insufficient protection for those who serve," Mahmood told the Commons.
The review follows the July 8 killing of Ann Widdecombe, a junior Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman. Widdecombe, 78, died after being struck 21 times with a hammer at her home in Haytor, Devon.
Widdecombe's death follows the killings of two serving British members of parliament in 2016 and 2021, stoking security concerns. Mahmood announced expanded police support for party leaders, former lawmakers, and political party spokespeople.
Former national security adviser Sir Stephen Lovegrove will lead the independent review into current security funding and measures. This work builds upon an ongoing review by Sir Robert Buckland concerning the murder of Sir David Amess.
Joshua Kerry has been charged with Widdecombe's murder and a terrorism offence targeting Nigel Farage. Prosecutors allege the attack was ideologically motivated, while the IOPC is investigating police responses to threats against Farage.
