Second system intensifying over Bay of Bengal as cyclone ‘Arnab’ loses steam

  • On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department reported a new low-pressure area formed over the Andaman Sea around 5.30 a.m. under the influence of a cyclonic circulation.
  • The remnant of Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab, now a depression, moved nearly northwards through Chhattisgarh and Odisha at 18 kmph, causing heavy rainfall across the region.
  • Exceptional rainfall hit South Odisha, with Patrapur recording 546 mm, the highest; water from the Baghalati dam flooded Ichchapuram and nearby villages in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Officials of the IMD in Amaravati said it would "most likely" affect Andhra Pradesh, forecasting heavy rain at isolated places on November 1, 2 and 3.
  • The system is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay and Bengal near the Andaman Nicobar & Islands by October 31.
