Databricks Buys Row Zero to Bring Governed Spreadsheets to Genie
Databricks will embed Row Zero’s spreadsheet grid into Genie as the company says more than 20,000 organizations use its platform.
On Thursday, Databricks announced its acquisition of Seattle-based startup Row Zero to integrate spreadsheet technology directly into its Genie AI assistant.
Employees often export enterprise data into insecure, disconnected spreadsheets; Row Zero solves this by keeping data connected to authoritative sources while enforcing user permissions and audit trails.
Databricks VP of Engineering Patrick Wendell said incorporating spreadsheet experience is essential as finance and operations teams adopt Genie, while Row Zero CEO Breck Fresen noted the need to connect spreadsheets to enterprise-scale data.
This acquisition follows Databricks' rapid growth period: the company hit $7 billion annualized revenue run-rate and $190 billion valuation in August, alongside acquiring Panther and Electric.
Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi told investors the company remains on track for an IPO as early as next year and intends to pursue "many more acquisitions like this in the future.
