Major search for two missing people in sea off Yorkshire coast
Two people remain missing after swimmers encountered treacherous freezing seas with 3-meter waves, prompting a large multi-agency search led by HM Coastguard.
- On Friday, January 2 HM Coastguard launched a major search at Withernsea after reports of a number of people in difficulty in the water, the alarm raised around 3.10pm.
- Freezing temperatures and three-metre waves hit the coastline, with a snow and ice warning for the East Yorkshire coast from midnight Saturday until midnight Sunday, Met Office chief meteorologist Jason Kelly said.
- HM Coastguard sent helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and Coastguard Rescue Teams from Withernsea, Hornsea and Hull, while RNLI lifeboats, Humber Rescue and an air ambulance joined more than 100 emergency personnel.
- It remained unclear whether casualties had been found, and officials refused to disclose details, while Humberside Fire and Rescue asked the public to avoid the promenade and the Alexandra Hotel, Withernsea offered free hot drinks to searchers.
- This is a breaking news story, and updates will be posted as they become available, as Hornsea Inshore Rescue was called out but unable to launch due to horrendous conditions and 3-metre waves, sending a 4x4 casualty care crew en route to Withernsea.
